Usually, it is because we are thinking too much. The harder you try to sleep the harder it becomes. Usually, we don’t try to go to sleep; we fall asleep. Falling asleep is a natural bodily function as we let go and drift from consciousness. Trying to get to sleep is keeping the conscious mind engaged and has the opposite effect; we stay awake.
Once we have developed a habit of engaging the conscious mind in trying to get to sleep, we have developed the habit of staying awake. The harder you try the harder it gets. The next problem comes from stressing and worrying about not being able to sleep and being tired the next day and the cycle goes on. The habit develops.
The mind often has reverse effects on what we want and that is the paradox. If I say ‘don’t think of pink elephants,’ what do you think of; pink elephants. It is the same with sleep, the more you want to sleep the less chance you have of getting any.
We form habits at a subconscious level, even the insomnia habit. So it makes sense that we need to address the problem at a subconscious level. It can often take 4 to 6 weeks to change the habit patterns of the mind. Our program is 4 to 6 weekly hypnotherapy sessions and a set of hypnosis recordings to listen to each day to subtly recondition the mind. We also have an insomnia recording to help you get to sleep. We are covered by some health funds.
